Bali Beyond Borders 2024: Understanding Human Resource Management and Bali’s Tri Hita Karana Philosophy in Business
Denpasar, November 7, 2024 – The fourth day of the Bali Beyond Borders 2024 program began with an interactive learning session on Human Resource Management. This engaging session was led by Ms. Ari Krismajayanti, focusing on Recruitment and HR in ASEAN. During the session, Ms. Ari provided an in-depth explanation of human resource management in general, along with the effective application of HR strategies within organizations, particularly in the ASEAN region. Participants learned about various essential aspects of HR management, such as recruitment, employee development, and the importance of fostering a healthy and productive work environment.
One of the most interesting parts of the session was the introduction of the Balinese philosophy Tri Hita Karana, which teaches the importance of balance in three aspects of life: the relationship between humans and God, the relationship between humans and each other, and the relationship between humans and nature. This philosophy was then linked to HR management, focusing on how to create harmony in work relationships and how these values can be applied within organizational culture. Students were encouraged to understand how Tri Hita Karana can influence the way organizations manage employees, prioritize their well-being, and maintain a supportive and sustainable work environment.
After the learning session, the activity continued with a visit to Blu-Zea Hotel, a hotel located in Seminyak, Bali. The participants of Bali Beyond Borders were warmly welcomed by the hotel management, who then guided them on a hotel tour. This visit aimed to provide practical insights into hotel operations and how HR management is applied in the hospitality industry. The participants were introduced to the various hotel facilities, and how each department collaborates to deliver the best guest experience. The visit also gave students the opportunity to see firsthand the application of principles they learned in a real-world setting, such as recruitment processes, training, and effective team management in the tourism industry. This experience enriched the students’ understanding of the importance of good HR management and how the hospitality sector in Bali, a crucial part of the local economy, manages human resources to achieve optimal performance and service quality. Through this visit, the participants gained a deeper understanding of the relationship between theory and practice in the workplace, while also expanding their knowledge of Bali’s tourism and hospitality industries.
Todays agenda also contributes to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Through a learning experience that integrates theory and practice in human resource management, participants not only gain knowledge relevant to addressing challenges in the workplace but are also trained to create inclusive and sustainable work environments. The Tri Hita Karana philosophy introduced in this session aligns with the principles of SDG 8, which encourages the creation of decent jobs and supports inclusive economic growth. The visit to Blu-Zea Hotel also demonstrated how the tourism industry can provide sustainable job opportunities for the local community while promoting social and environmental balance. By emphasizing values such as diversity, inclusiveness, and employee well-being, this program not only prepares participants to become global leaders ready to face economic challenges but also contributes to a more equitable and sustainable development.
