Undiknas University and University of New England Collaborate to Empower Youth Through Seminar on Media Censorship in the Digital Era
Denpasar, Bali, April 25, 2025 – The Communication Studies Program at Undiknas University successfully organized an international seminar titled “Navigating Media Censorship in Indonesia’s Digital Age.” The event took place at the Dwi Tunggal Auditorium, Undiknas University, and was attended primarily by Undiknas students. The seminar was designed to explore the challenges faced by society, especially the younger generation, in dealing with media censorship in the digital age and how this phenomenon affects the consumption patterns of information on various media platforms, particularly social media.

The seminar featured Dr. Jane Ahlstrand from the University of New England, Australia, as the keynote speaker. Dr. Ahlstrand delivered an in-depth presentation on significant issues such as press freedom, media regulations, and their impact on social development and democracy in Indonesia. This comprehensive discussion provided students with a broader understanding of the media’s role as a pillar of democracy while emphasizing the importance of critical thinking in evaluating information they receive, particularly on social media. The seminar also fostered an interactive environment for participants to ask questions and engage in dialogue with Dr. Ahlstrand, gaining deeper insights. In addition to discussing general media issues, the seminar also highlighted the challenges faced by teenagers in the digital era. Dr. Ahlstrand’s presentation underscored the importance of awareness among the younger generation to use social media wisely. Young people were encouraged to filter information that is beneficial for their personal growth and society, avoid negative content such as hoaxes and hate speech, and actively use social media for productive purposes, such as finding additional income opportunities. In this rapidly advancing digital era, social media can serve as a platform for selling products, promoting services, or leveraging various monetization features. The youth were also inspired to share content that provides educational and inspirational value, such as study tips, practical skills, and social campaigns that support positive change in society.

Through this international seminar, Undiknas University has demonstrated its commitment to advancing communication studies, particularly by equipping the younger generation with a deeper understanding of the media’s role in the digital era. The event is expected to provide students with new perspectives and critical skills to tackle challenges in the digital world, enabling them to contribute positively toward creating a healthier, more inclusive, and productive media ecosystem. With the knowledge gained, it is hoped that young people can become agents of change, utilizing social media as a tool for self-development, community empowerment, and the creation of opportunities that benefit their lives and their surroundings.
