
Undiknas University Explores Environmental Justice through Green Criminology Guest Lecture
Denpasar, Bali, June 5, 2025 – The Faculty of Law, Undiknas University, hosted an insightful online Guest Lecture on the topic “Green Criminology“. The event featured Mariyam Jameelah, MA, a lecturer from the Faculty of Law, Economics, and Governance at Utrecht University, Netherlands. Held via Zoom Meeting, the session welcomed lecturers and students from the International Undergraduate Program in Law at Undiknas University. This initiative reflects Undiknas’s ongoing commitment to equipping students with interdisciplinary insights and exposing them to global legal perspectives.

In her presentation, Mariyam Jameelah introduced Green Criminology as an emerging branch of criminology that focuses on environmental crimes and harms. She emphasized that this field looks beyond traditional legal definitions of crime, considering broader ecological and ethical impacts of environmental degradation. “Green Criminology expands our concept of crime victims to include non-human species and entire ecosystems,” said Jameelah. She also emphasized the importance of environmental justice and the necessity for legal systems to address the ecological harm frequently caused by powerful industries or state actors.

The audience engaged enthusiastically, raising thoughtful questions on the application of Green Criminology in Indonesia and the global challenges of enforcing environmental law. This event marked a valuable opportunity for Undiknas students and faculty to reflect on the role of law in promoting sustainability and environmental protection.
